Big Upgrade: Smarter System, Fewer Questions

Hi, Neil from Kaertala here.

On November 16th, we announced a major overhaul of our question system. But I’ll be honest with you: even after that update, the system wasn't where it needed to be.

It didn’t give the insights we wanted, and it didn't reason fast enough. So, we went back to the drawing board. We spent the last few weeks completely rebuilding the "brain" behind Kaertala.

The result is a Context-Aware Clinical State Machine. It represents a fundamental shift from merely gathering data to creating real clinical insight to help you quit faster—seamlessly, and without relying on brute-force willpower.

1. We Switched from 5 Questions to 2

We conducted a user survey, and the feedback was clear: 5 questions felt like a chore. You aren’t here for fun; you are here because you want to quit.

We reduced the daily limit to 2 interactions because scarcity creates focus.

  • Question 1 (The Calibration): A quick check-in to measure your friction level.
  • Question 2 (The Intervention): A single, high-impact question designed to break the loop you are in right now.

2. The "Bridge & Blade" System

To make those two questions count, we’ve built a proprietary framework called "Bridge & Blade":

  • The Bridge (The Insight): Before asking a question, the system now shares a micro-lesson about why you are feeling this way. It explains the mechanism of the urge so you can understand it.
  • The Blade (The Question): Then, it asks one surgical question to cut through the noise.

Insight: The "Sedative" Trap

Alongside our app updates, we are rewriting our core guides to be more scientifically rigorous. Here is a critical concept from our new guide on insomnia that might reshape how you view your struggle:

You aren't just "unable to sleep." You are in withdrawal.

For years, you may have used this cycle as a biological tranquilizer to down-regulate your nervous system at the end of the day. Now that you have removed the "sedative," your brain is in shock.

If you are awake at 3:00 AM, vibrating with energy, know this: This is not a punishment; it is a receipt. It is proof that your brain is finally doing the hard work of recalibration. Every hour you spend awake is an hour you are breaking the dependency.

Major Article Overhaul

We have rewritten our core guides from the ground up to include insights like the one above. Even if you have read them before, I strongly recommend re-reading them now:

The Goal

To conclude, the whole point of Kaertala is to self-obviate. Ideally, the tool helps you enough that eventually, you don't need the tool at all.

The update is live now. All feedback is welcome—just reply to this email or use our contact form here.

Let’s see where your focus is today.

Warmly,
Neil & The Kaertala Team
